Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) is a national public institution, the oldest institution of higher education in Mozambique. It was founded on August 21, 1962, by Decree-Law no. 44530, under the name of General University Studies of Mozambique. On May 1, 1976, President Samora Moisés Machel gave this institution the name Eduardo Mondlane University, in honour of the important historical role played in Mozambique by Doctor Eduardo Chivambo Mondlane. The Eduardo Mondlane University early assumed itself as a national university, having designed a policy that guarantees equal access to students from different regions of the country and seeking to maintain and increase the female presence in the institution. It is a public institution of higher education endowed with legal personality and enjoys scientific, pedagogical, administrative and financial autonomy. Many generations of young people have passed through UEM, who today perform functions and activities in the most diverse spheres of society, at the level of government, social, economic and service sectors, both in the country and internationally.
