@ Addis Ababa, EthiopiaGoats and sheep are very important for the socio-economic wellbeing and resilience of the African people especially women and youth. Africa is endowed with around 1 billion Sheep and Goat representing 24% and 31% of the world’s small ruminant population, respectively. The majority of small ruminants on the African continent are reared mainly in arid and semi-arid areas and often owned by women and youth. Small Ruminants are a safety net for women and youth who are vulnerable to socio-economic shocks and unrest. Sheep and goats are a core component in the climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies within the African Production systems as compared to cattle. However, their production and productivity is greatly hampered by Pest des Petits Ruminants (PPR) which is a deadly disease of sheep and goats with high socio-economic and trade impacts; and is endemic in most Africa countries. Indeed, this disease is consistently reported in 47 countries out of the 55-member states of the African Union. It is for this reason that AU-IBAR and AU-PANVAC, the RECs, FAO, WOAH among others are supporting the Africa Union Member States in their efforts to eradicate this disease by the global target of 2030.
