Kuzuri Farm and ARWAFA Network Partner for Feed Security in the RAFFS Initiative
Kuzuri Dairy Farm, based in Margawa, Kenya, is an emerging force in the country's livestock production sector. With a strong commitment to high-quality dairy farming and sustainable practices, Kuzuri has focused on enhancing productivity while maintaining locally rooted agricultural systems. As feed remains one of the most important inputs in dairy farming, the farm’s new partnership with Africa Women Resources Farming and Agribusiness Network (ARWAFA-N) comes at a strategic time when feed supply networks are under pressure due to global disruptions.
In a significant step towards securing feed distribution networks for dairy production in Kenya, Kuzuri Dairy Farm has entered into a formal agreement with AWARFA-N. The contract, effective from 12th May 2025 to 11th May 2026, outlined the terms under which ARWAFA-N will supply feed ingredients to Kuzuri Dairy Farm on a as-needed basis. This agreement showcases the collaborative spirit that the Resilient African Feed and Fodder Systems (RAFFS) initiative promotes.
For Kuzuri Dairy Farm, this agreement ensures a consistent supply of quality feed ingredients for maintaining the health and productivity of their dairy herd. For ARWAFA, facilitating market linkages for women-led agribusinesses in the animal resource sector, the agreement contributes to the project’s goal of empowering women and strengthening their role in the livestock value chain. This partnership not only provides Kuzuri farm with essential feed ingredients but also supports the growth and sustainability of a women-led enterprise, fostering economic empowerment and contributing to a more equitable livestock sector.
The agreement represents a tangible action aligned with the broader goals of the RAFFS project, which seeks to build resilient feed and fodder systems across Africa in response to the “Triple C” crises: COVID-19, climate shocks and the conflict in Ukraine.
This partnership contributes to RAFFS objectives by:
· Boosting local supply: By relying on regionally sourced inputs through ARWAFA-N, the contract helps localize and stabilize feed supplies
· Empowering women in agribusiness: Given ARWAFA-N’s mandate to uplift African women in livestock agribusiness, this collaboration directly supports RAFFS’s commitment to inclusive growth.
· Improving livestock productivity: Consistent access to quality feed will enable Kuzuri to enhance dairy yields, fulfilling RAFFS’s goal to improve livestock output despite external shocks
As RAFFS emphasizes the importance of multi-stakeholder coordination and evidence-based solutions, contracts like this set a precedent for how private sector actors can directly implement RAFFS-aligned strategies on the ground. The contract also promotes data-informed decision-making by requiring delivery notes and invoicing per consignment, which aligns with RAFFS’ emphasis on better analytical capacity.
Dr. Sophie Wangari Macharia, the visionary owner of Kuzuri Dairy Farm and Dr. Christine Kalui, President of the ARWAFA-N Kenya Chapter, stood side by side on the day of the contract signing, marking a pivotal step towards strengthening local feed supply chains. “This partnership reflects what ARWAFA stands for – empowering women, supporting local enterprises and reinforcing Africa’s ability to feed itself through strategic collaboration.” said Dr.Kalui while highlighting the broader impact of the deal.
With just under two years left in the RAFFS project timeline, replicable models like the Kuzuri-AWARFA-N agreement could serve as examples for other dairy and livestock producers across the continent. By combining strategic planning, regional sourcing and gender-inclusive representation, this partnership captures the very resilience that RAFFS aims to instill in Africa’s feed and fodder systems.
